Description
Aquascape De-Icer - 300 Watts
Reliable Winter Protection for Your Pond Fish
The Aquascape 300-Watt Pond De-Icer is a must-have for pond owners in cold climates. As ice forms over a pond, harmful gases produced by decaying organic matter can become trapped, potentially harming or killing your fish. This de-icer is specifically designed to maintain a small opening in the surface ice, ensuring that oxygen can enter the water and toxic gases can escape.
Constructed from high-quality stainless steel, this unit is built to resist corrosion and provide years of reliable service. Unlike older, high-wattage tank heaters, the Aquascape De-Icer is thermostatically controlled, meaning it only turns on when the water temperature nears freezing. This energy-efficient design helps protect your fish without causing a spike in your monthly electric bill.
Key Features:
-
Promotes Gas Exchange: Keeps a critical vent hole open in the ice to allow oxygen in and carbon dioxide/methane out.
-
Thermostatically Controlled: Automatically activates only when needed, reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
-
Stainless Steel Construction: Durable, corrosion-resistant heating element ensures longevity even in harsh winter conditions.
-
Safe for All Ponds: Designed for use in both liner and pre-formed ponds; the heating element stays cool enough to prevent damage to pond liners.
-
LED Indicator Light: Features a built-in light that glows when the unit is actively heating, so you can verify it's working at a glance.
-
Fish-Friendly Design: Provides a safe environment for koi and other pond fish to overwinter successfully.
Usage Recommendations:
-
Zone Selection: In most regions, a single 300-watt unit is sufficient for ponds up to 1,000–1,500 gallons.
-
Extreme Cold: For regions in USDA Gardening Zone 5 or colder, or for exceptionally large ponds, we recommend pairing the de-icer with a Pond Aerator for maximum gas exchange.
-
Placement: Place the de-icer in a location with some water depth, away from the very edge of the pond, to ensure effective heating.

Installation Tip: Do not place the de-icer directly on the bottom of the pond where it might get covered by leaves or silt. If your pond is shallow, you can use the integrated float to keep the heating element positioned correctly at the surface.
Winter Care Reminder: Never use a hammer or heavy object to break ice on a frozen pond. The shockwaves can be lethal to dormant fish. If your pond freezes over completely, place a pot of boiling water on the ice to melt a hole, then install your Aquascape De-Icer to keep it open.
Related Products: Complete your winter setup with an Aquascape Pond Aerator Kit or a Submersible Pond Thermometer to monitor water temperatures throughout the season. Available at Underwater Warehouse.
